Buy Panasonic ES8109S Vortex Wet/Dry Shaver with Nano Technology and HydraClean System

OK, so I have decided to stop being a review parasite (I often look to reviews to help me in buying decisions, but don't write my own review). I have been using the Panasonic E8109S shaver for about a week now, and here is my 2 cents.

1st, in my opinion, based on using two rotary electric razors (Norelco), 2 foil razors (Braun), and now a 3rd foil razor, none give as close of a shave as a razor blade, but if you give your face about a month to adapt you can generally get a good shave from the better (more expensive) electrics. I prefer the foil razors, as they seem to me to shave closer, and it is easier to maneuver them around the ears and nose without leaving behind hairs. Now on to the review.

As stated above, I had 2 Braun shavers. Braun 1 was an excellent shaver that cost around $80 - $100. It gave a great shave, held a charge for a couple of weeks, and quietly hummed when operating. It came with the Braun cleaning system. When it's motor failed after a year of operation I bought Braun 2, which was a cheaper razor (around $60 I think). It didn't hold a charge as long, didn't have the cleaning system, didn't shave as well and was much louder. The lesson here is you get what you pay for, and name brand doesn't guarantee anything. Luckily I realized Braun's warranty is 2 years, not 1 as I had thought, so I got Braun 1 repaired for free (they even mailed it to me after fixing it) and I got another 3 years or so use before the on/off switch got stuck in the on position, and I started using Braun 2 again. Needless to say, it didn't take long before I was ready to shell out some cash for a better razor.

Initially I was planning on getting another higher priced Braun, but was pulled to the Panasonic by a couple of points. First, it is cheaper than Braun's with comparable features, and I was intrigued by the ability to shave using shaving cream again. Since the Panasonic sells for $100 (although I got it for $73), I will compare it to Braun 1, which was similarly priced. I cannot compare it to today's Braun models, so you will have to look to reviews of those products, although I doubt they are much different from the model I owned. It was a 4000 series (I don't remember the exact number, but I still have Braun 2, which is model 5770).

Cleaning System: I much prefer the cleaning system that comes with the Panasonic, as the base is more square, and takes up less room than the rounded Braun base, and more importantly it has rubber feet that keep it in place when the razor is being cleaned. I had to wedge the Braun cleaner against something, or else it would slide across my sink from the vibrations caused by the razor running. It also seemed louder than the Panasonic, but since it died a couple of years ago, I may be remembering that part incorrectly.

Ergonomics: The Panasonic is a clear winner here as well. Not only is the razor noticeably lighter, it is skinnier, with a contoured shape for easy gripping, and a rubberized handle to reduce slipping. The bulkier, plastic handled Braun doesn't come close.

Noise: Here I have to give the edge to the Braun. I don't think the Panasonic is much louder in Db, but it is much more high pitched, almost like a Dentist's drill and hair clippers had a baby, and this is it. Luckily I find that I get used to the sound about 2 seconds after I turn it on, probably because it is fairly quiet. It still beats Braun 2's roar.

Shave: Again the Panasonic clearly beats Braun 2, but the more aptly compared Braun 1 gives it a run for it's money. I would call this a tie in the dry shave category. The dry shave was closer than the shave with shaving cream the first couple of days, but it seems to be shaving closer as I continue using shaving cream. I'm not sure if this is due to my face adjusting, me learning better technique, or what. I will say that I love using shaving cream again, and it is worth the miniscule difference that may occur in closeness. When I finish shaving, my face feels totally clean shaven, and I only notice the difference at the end of the day (stubble seems slightly more pronounced).

Overall, I give the Panasonic 5 stars because it is reasonably priced, gives a great shave, holds it's charge for a long time and isn't unreasonably loud. The led that gives the remaining charge in 10% increments is also nice (and puts it in competition with higher priced competitors). On the negative side, the whine is a bit high pitched, and I cannot find replacement heads or cleaning solution at local stores, so will have to order it online - probably cheaper, but certainly not as convenient. All that to say I believe this is the best electric razor I have ever owned, and I won't hesitate to get another one in a few years when this one inevitably dies.
